UN SG Praises Morocco's Cooperation with MINURSO

United Nations (New York) - In his latest report on the Moroccan Sahara, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended Morocco's full and complete cooperation with MINURSO, stressing that thanks to the cooperation of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), the UN mission has been able to resolve all outstanding issues since its April 2019 report and to reach final and acceptable solutions for both Morocco and MINURSO.

Guterres notes that the MINURSO had fulfilled its mandate during the reporting period, adding that a bilateral coordination mechanism had been developed by the MINURSO to address outstanding issues and allegations of violations in a more proactive manner.

As a testimony to Morocco's cooperation with the United Nations, Guterres underlines that the participation of the FAR in this mechanism in April is already yielding extremely positive results.

Also, in his recommendations to the members of the Security Council, the UN Secretary General "welcomed Morocco's cooperation" and urged the other parties to cooperate fully with the MINURSO to put an end to their massive violations of the Military Agreements and Security Council resolutions, which he has extensively listed in this report.

Finally, Guterres expressed confidence, following his meeting, on the margins of the high-level week of the 74th session of the General Assembly, with Nasser Bourita, minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans residing abroad, that "progress can be made to overcome all the constraints related to the functioning of MINURSO".
